Repair and Explore

Leximon, Marian Hegemony, 3038-07-10

The infantry did not find The Void, but captured several other enemy 'Mech pilots. Several squads were sent to search for The Void.

hod4 monitored the enemy Drop Ship with his Shadow Hawk and made sure it departed without leaving any troops behind.

We brought all captured 'Mechs and the ramaining parts of the destroyed ones back in the base. The Warhammer of Pergamon was quite a bit special. It had a XL engine and four medium pulse laser.

While the 'Techs started to repair our 'Mechs, hod4 and hod2 again wandered over the island in the Assassin 'Mechs and looked for further troops and installments of the Intruders, but they did not find anything.

The next day the infantry found The Void hidden in a lab and brought him to a cell.

hod3 went to work on the databases and tried to find more information concerning the meaning of the SLDF-serial number I discovered in the sublevels of the base. He tried to decrypt the files hod2 found earlier in the database was did not succeed, his meager computer skills were not able to crack the sophisticated encryption of the SLDF.

In the meantime I had a chat with The Void. He was totally lethargic and did not speak much, he seemed to be drugged. He could also not give us any further information.

hod3 and me the started to investigate the tunnelsystem with a platoon of infantry. 1st platoon, whose men had experience in several Loki missions, was considered to be on the very top of elite infantry units.

We roped through the crack in the wall that was also used by the vanished Intruder patrol into the 18 meters high tunnel. Above us, 2nd platoon remained as a reserve.

We followed the tunnel for about 3km, way out of the basis, when we reached a part of the tunnel that was damaged and partly collapsed. In the middle was a lake. As soon as we neared that area our advance guard gestured us to stop. We heared a fizzling and raking from our front. Suddenly three big cats with long ears jumped towards us, about thrice the size of a tiger. The first of our men was bitten by one tiger, one was shot down by the concentrated fire of several of our men. The Hauptmann ordered curtain fire and the animals were quickly mowed down.

In the cave we found two bodies with Intruder insignia. Probably survivors of the Intruder explorers.

We addvanced further and came to a cross road section. We turned to the east and soon found a much bigger tunnel. Our way spanned a bridge through this tunnel which accommodated a river. Immediately the lead soldier gave alarm. Several spider like, about a feet long, creatures emerged from the darkness and started to fall down on us. Four of our guys with flame throwers went immediately to work and burned the creatures away.

We then followed the river back in the direction of the base. The way went uphill, after about a kilometer we came into a big cavern that was mostly destroyed. The walls were crumbled and in the 30m high ceiling was a hole through which the sun shone. Again the spiders attacked us. Before the flamer guys could eliminate them one of our men was bitten by the spiders. Several minutes later he died. We found more bodies of the Intruder explorers in this cave as well. While we searched the bodies another cat like creature jumped out of the underbrush that flourished on the floor of the cave but was shot down before it could cause any harm. The Hauptmann, who knew a bit about zoology and read about the planet before the mission, did not recognize these animals as being indigenous to the planet. He suspected they were some sort of genetic experiments conducted by the LCAF.

We followed the tunnel which turned downhill again. About two kilometers in front of the base, at the location of another break in the ceiling, we found some bodies of the Intruders again. Here there were again plants on the floor, and we encountered more spiders.

When we reached the area of the base the Hauptmann estimated that we were about 150 meters below the ground. The river veered away to the east into a very low tunnel without any walkable bankment so we could not enter it. A smaller, but still big enough for a BattleMech to enter, tunnel continued further southward.

After some meters we found a steel door that blocked the tunnel. Besides it was a terminal. On the wall was written the same SLDF serial I found some days earlier. Additionaly, 'store Room II' was written below it.

The infantry platoon had a codebreaker programme and tried to open the door but did not succeed.

We went back to the last place where we found a hole in the ceiling and set up camp there. We radiod base to sent out some jeeps into our direction. When they were in our approximate area we shot flares out of the hole until they found it. Our plan was, to try and get a 'Mech with a heavy laser down into the tunnel the next day to deal with the door.

In the night, one soldier fell victim to another spider. hod3 at one point decided to go back to the door when he could not get back to sleep. He himself tried again to open the door using the terminal and the code breaker. The guards we put at the door mocked him, as the experts did not manage to open the door who would not be able to do so either. Suddenly the door went click and opened. Through sheer luck, hod3 somehow managed to break the code.

A female voice sounded in the tunnel: "Welcome on the Knoll Island Military Base, Sir. Store Room II at your command. This store room was opened and closed the last time on 2784/03/03 when the stored goods were loaded to accompanythe Exodus of Genereal Kerensky. All that remained are some reserves for a emergency deployment. Please remeber to take stock for the SLDF statistics on your departure."

hod3 called us and we advanced into the dimly lit (several lamps were broken) storage area. It was amazingly large and several large storage rooms branched off from the main room. We discovered several ac/10 that were directed at the door. Luckily we did not break the door down... We found several other security measures too, flamers, rifles etc. that would have made a forced entry very unpleasant for us...

The first storage room (which provided room for about 60 'Mechs) was empty, only some crates remained near the four repair bays. On one wall was a small office. We entered it to look into the computer system for a stock list, but did not manage to start the computer, it obviously was somehow damaged.

When we explored the whole complex, we found in one a Rifleman 'Mech leaning on the wall, obviously he had some problems with his myomers after three hundred years without maintenance.

In the same area we found infantry suits (with the insignia of a SLDF general) which the infantry took away. We found some spoiled tinned food and some old spirituous beverages.

We found another 'Mech that looked like a Dragon but actually was of an uknown design. In another room we found an Awesome (with four PPCs) and a medium 'Mech of unknown design.

The 'Mechs were painted in the SLDF standard camo scheme and bore the insignia of the 1st Cameron Elite Guard.

The next day we installed a makeshift lift on the break in the ceiling and brought our Techs down to take a look at what we found. After they swarmed over the machines for several hours, the were able to indentify the unknown machines as a Draken and a Cheetah from what the on-board computer told them.

We were happy to hear that all 'Mechs were basically fully operational, but needed mantenance work, espicially some new myomers, before they were ready for combat operations.

The Cheeta was equipped with a jump torniseter and jumped through the hole in the ceiling. The Awesome got an arm and leg heavily damaged while he was lifted up by two 'Mechs and heavy recovery vehicles. The other Mechs were taken up realtively undamaged.

Our Techs immediately started their work on the machines as soon as they were brought into our base.

On the 12th we were able to make contact with the General again, and I told him everything about the last attack, about the prisoners we took and about the SLDF-storage area we discovered.

He then told me, confused again as he was before, that the fighting was in the endphase. On the continent they fought very close engagements. The enemy losses were about 35% of their starting strength, our side lost about 40%. For the planned final blow he needed our 'Mechs and told us we were to fetched by a drop ship within the next few days. He ordered us to take along all the 'Mechs we found an captured.
