Battlemechs Erased

Caldarium, , 3040-05-02

The inflicted damage during the cave battle was too much to surge ahead, so we decided to resurface. Now it was time to discuss another cave adventure versus a battle on the open field. The ballot was won by two and a half vote in favor of the latter. We made our plan, moving the overlord all around the planet. Four drops were done, letting us out on the last but one. We faced a large wood between us and Asmodeans fortress.
Fielding two lances we were nearly at full strength. Hod1 piloting his Victor, HOD-2 trying the Longbow this time, HOD-3 sticking to the Rifleman III, HOD-4 in the next Battlemaster, HOD-5 taking her well-known Axeman, HOD-7 steering the rare Achilles, HOD-8 back in the Banshee and HOD-9 took the leaders reserve, an Imp.
As we were reaching the offshoots of the wood, we had enemy contact. They were also divided into two groups, but outnumbered us by two and eighty tons respectively. The big guns contained a starleague era Awesome, a Mauler, a Dreadnought and an Imperial Archer. The other group was not dragging much behind with a Cyclops, a Stalker, a Warhammer, a Dire Griffin, a Wild Crab and a starleague era Thunderbolt.

Colonel Curacao Santiago introduced himself as a member of the legacy of brothers and requested our disappearance, or they would do this on their own. Our leader responded by referring to those we already made disappear.
Inevitably the battle began and HOD-3 set it up nearly perfect by damaging the Cyclops' gyro, but he managed to retain control. At the start of the battle we got into many one on one fights. Hod7 had to deal with the Wild Crab, HOD-3 picked on the Cyclops and HOD-2 found the Dire Griffin, while HOD Leader together with HOD-4 brought the Dreadnought down, just to notice, that it is on the ground still a devastating 'Mech. We pulled even very fast, as HOD-3 erased the Cyclops and HOD-4 beheaded the Dreadnought, taking him out definitely. Hod9 engaged with the Warhammer. After she had already knocked him over, HOD-2 made it a lot easier, by getting two headshots what left the Warhammers pilot unconscious. Before HOD-9 took him finally out, HOD-3 helped HOD-7 against the Crab attack, as he destroyed one leg, making this close combat 'Mech less dangerous. Hod2 turned to the Dire Griffin again and ripped one leg off. We could not imagine to get a better start, but suddenly we had to learn that those who laugh last laugh best. Hod8 was the first one, to be shut down by the enemy, followed by HOD-4 and HOD-5. Hod2 managed to break the run in the wrong direction as he disrupted the Dire Griffin, but this was just a small ray of hope. The explosion damaged the Stalker and HOD-7 and unfortunately HOD-7 could not stand the damage. At that time our firepower was cut in half and we had to get the momentum back. Hod9 did so by eliminating the Wild Crab and HOD Leader was encouraged by it and kicked off the Awesomes head. Colonel Santiago managed to get out of the cockpit quickly, so he was not harmed.
Meanwhile HOD-3 learned how to take a 'Mech out without being credited for it, as he blasted the Thunderbolt to the ground. It was destructed by the impact, so he could take a last alpha strike at HOD-3, resulting in a loss of both arms or one could say losing nearly his entire firepower. So he decided to hide somewhere near the battlefield, hoping his buddies will emerge victorious. Hod2 did his best trying to fulfil his wishes. He took an alpha strike at the Stalker and got its ammunition to explode. But he suffered several critical engine hits causing his 'Mech to overheat and could not avoid a shutdown. Being an immobile target it was only a matter of time until HOD-2 was destroyed. Further critical engine hits brought his Longbow to burst into pieces.

Now it was two on two. Hod1 with HOD-9 against the Imperial Archer and the Mauler. A well placed kick by HOD Leader sent the Imperial Archer to kingdom come and as a counter draw HOD-9 got destroyed by the Mauler. Hod1 had called for reinforcement and it did not last long until two of our J. Edgar hovers arrived. They made hit 'n' run attacks at the Mauler and although they are weakly armed we still had not given up as HOD Leader lost one leg.
It was very close and both sides could have won this battle, but neither did. The Mauler teared our leaders Victor apart and the explosion caused one of the hovers to explode, too. This inflicted damage on the remaining Mauler, who like HOD-3 favored to save his 'Mech instead of forcing an ultimate decision. We lost many 'Mechs in that battle and although we had much greater problems, by that time the mission could not pay off.
