Falling Down

Caldarium, , 3040-05-22

All HOD Pilots but HOD-3 were ejected and landed safely in nonhazardous terrain, although the jungle held a residual risk. It was not a wild animal what ached HOD-7 soon. Suddenly he noticed a man approximately fifty meters away from him and while thinking about if it was friend or foe, he got hit by a bullet. He had no chance to shoot back because he fell unconscious to the ground. The offender imagined his shot to be lethal, but HOD-7 was lucky and only received a broken rib. One of the helicopters collected all pilots and after some searching even HOD-7 was found. During the flight back to our former base, HOD-4 tried his best in vetting HOD-7. He was somewhat successful, but the wound inflamed, so HOD-7 needed additional medical treatment some days later. The other helicopter scouted for a path to the fortress and found one some minutes to dawn. HOD-2 and HOD-4 were chosen to keep watch there and noticed a transport helicopter, that used this way to deliver goods or weapons. Meanwhile our dropship was able to head for the space port. HOD-3 came there with his 'Mech and the remaining 'Mech pilots were carried by the helicopters. After we got some knowledge about the transporter, his job and his cycle, we planned a trojan horse as a decoy.
We hired Paolos Legion, a less than trustworthy unit of sixty men and a boss greedy for money. Furthermore HOD-3 obtained a portable ECM-suite, so we could break apart all connections of the support point, where the transporter got some of his freight. Paolos Legion fielded two light 'Mechs that should secure the area for the time of battle and Paolos men would board the enemy helicopter during his stop and because of the ECM there would be no chance to deliver a message to the fortress. All sixty men were able to get into the helicopter and everything went as planned before. It also left us unrelated to all objects, we gave to Paolos Legion, that was on the way to the fortress as we gathered in all of our reamaining 'Mechs but the LAM. Paolo proved to be more reliable than we thought, and the million c-notes he got in advance were well invested.

Our position was about two or three miles away from Asmodeans fortress. It was all or nothing as our entire 'Mech pool was at stake. HOD Leader tried the grasshopper for the first time because HOD-4 hd a go at the Dreadnought, which was available because HOD-3 preferred the Rifleman III again. HOD-2 went back to the Fuzzy Launcher, HOD-9 made the second stint for the Wolverine and both HOD-7 and HOD-8 piloted a Wild Crab each, a 'Mech we had rarely used until this deployment.
We got just as we expected enemy contact soon. Lieutenant Mailand ordered our retreat, but only made us yawning. Recognizing no attempt of retreat he tried it with a pun and threatened us with our defeat. Another wasted message, as our leaders response was a loud snoring noise.
Our trojan horse seemed to pay off and we found out later, that some 'Mech pilots were killed by Paolos Legion before they could get to their vehicle. We had not more than two enemy 'Mechs - a Wolverine and a Dire Griffin. This looked like a walkthrough until the next Battlemech entered sensor range. Hardly visible because of a zero-signature-system Asmodean himself fielded an identical Pillager as we already saw on Parsig. A short smile was raised in memory of the tragic end Asmodeans last Pillager suffered, but with the first Gauss hits at HOD-3s Rifleman it vanished quickly. Asmodean sizzled: funkDie, Harrrrbingerzzzz of Defeat!/funk
We tried to get the mobile medium 'Mechs out of battle first, so we could concentrate on Asmodean alone. The Wolverine was the first victim and the Dire Griffin should follow. HOD Leader damaged the Wolverines gyro and HOD-4 scored five critical hits on the Dire Griffins right torso. Shortly after the Wolverine was executed HOD-3 finished the Dire Griffin and it was Asmodean alone against us.

This suddenly led to a change in strategy. All but HOD Leader and HOD-2 headed for the fortress because Asmodean had picked on HOD-2 and we sensed a chance to storm the fortress with five 'Mechs. HOD Leader and HOD-2 should follow while slowing down Asmodean, but after HOD-2 lost his arm with his main armament we pursued another strategy. Only the fast 'Mechs went for the fortress and HOD-3 and HOD-4 assisted HOD Leader and HOD-2. Because of his weak firepower HOD-2 searched for a safe place in the woods and hoped that the other three would get the job done.
As HOD-7, HOD-8 and HOD-9 arrived at the fortress the gun towers were already out of control due to Paolos Legion. A last resistance appeared in form of a Battlemaster. This one lasted very short. He was taken down by multiple alpha-strikes and HOD-8 managed a shot to its head, leaving the pilot unconscious. Before falling asleep, the enemy hit HOD-8s engine critically and one Wild Crab was shut down. HOD-7 in the remaining Wild Crab got revenge and destroyed the Battlemaster. Now the entrance of the fortress was the next immobile target.
Asmodean tried to evade the superior number of 'mechs and sometimes managed to get short one-on-one fights. One of them destroyed a gauss rifle of HOD-3s Rifleman III, another one ripped an arm of HOD-4s Dreadnought off, and the last one left HOD Leader limping with one leg. It did not take him out of battle and although he fell down sometimes, still unleashed some lasers on Asmodeans Pillager. Having lost one of his PPCs, Asmodean considered retreat, to save his 'Mech this time. It was HOD-2, who sacrificed his Fuzzy Launcher for giving HOD Leader, HOD-3 and HOD-4 one more chance to eliminate the Pillager, and Asmodean took the bait.

Only HOD-3 and HOD-4 could engage in pursuit. Asmodean headed in the opposite direction of the fortress. A desperate shot by HOD-3 with his remaining gauss rifle turned into a miracle. After HOD-4 had successfully peeled off the armor, HOD-3 ripped apart one leg of the Pillager. It was not only d?j? vu for us, Asmodean, as he had not passed out yet, saw himself falling down again. It went even worse for him, as the contact with the ground caused an explosion in one of the gauss rifles, so his Pillager was shut down. Following his 'Mech he passed out either and we captured him.
Meanwhile the blasting agents detonated the fortress, after we salvaged a Mauler, that we will give to HOD-2 instead of the lost Fuzzy Launcher. Only a few parts of basement floors were not fully blown away, but our mission was fully accomplished.
