The Live of von Stein Theobald

since his birth, the way of Theobald von Stein was clear: Like his three elder brothers and his father and most other male forfathers he was to become an officer in the Steiner Military.

When he finished school he immeadiatly joined Nagelring. At first he was very eager to finish his training and begin with active duty. But soon he found out, that his military live would be overshadowed by his relatives, as he was alway compared with their performances from the beginning of his trainig.

Many instructors in the acadamy had also trained his elder brothers and constantly evaluated his performance in comparison with his brothers. Many of his fellow officer candidates made comments on his heritage as well, some teasing him for bad performances, some admiring him for his heritage. Hardly any of his comrades looked at him as an individial - most just saw a member of the von Stein family.

When he passed the exams and was promoted to Lieutenant he thought that from know on only his performance would count and eagerly looked forward to his first command of a lance. This was in a company one of his brothers once commanded as a Hauptmann, in a battalion his eldest brother was commander of at the time, in a regiment his father commanded a decade ago... the comparisons continued.

After his first few combat experiences, which of course were compared to the first time his family members had seen combat, he gave up hope of ever being regarded as Theobald von Stein.

After two of his elder brothers fell in combat, his family decided that he was to quit his military career, and instead working in the family business. The family feared, that their male heirs were threatened with extinction.

To Theobald this fate was even worse than his current situation. Not only would he be a 'Mech Warrior who was not evaluated by his own deeds, but he would not be a 'Mech Warrior at all.

He argued the issue with his family, but to no avail, they insisted on their decision - which Theobald declined to the annoyance of his realtives. He remained in the military, but soon found out what extensive influence his family had within the LCAF. He was "promoted" to the position of a supply officer in a depot deep within the Lyran Commonwealth, without a chance of ever becoming involved in a fight.

He applied for positions in units deployed at the borders of the LC but all his requests were declined. Might this be connected with his father's position in the administration of the LCAF...?

His family thought they achieved their goal of keeping him from frontline duty and thus keeping him alive. They regreted having forced him in a position he loathed, but prefered his dismay over his death.

All the more they were surprised by his reaction. To their dismay he quit the LCAF (being the first von Stein to do this, which certainly damaged the von Stein reputation to a certain degree) and decided to form his own mercenary unit - where he was sure no-one would compare him with his ancestors and he could decide what kind of job he would do, which certainly would not be administrative ones.

As he owned a share of the quite enourmous family capital he had enough Credits to get started. He went for Galatea and bought himself an used VND-1R Vindicator. It did not take him long to make friends with some other youg wanna-be mercenaries and together they formed the one lance strong "Harbingers of Defeat" mercenary unit.

Due to his officer rank and experience as a combat proven commander of a lance in the LCAF he became the leader of the newly founded mercenary force.

Although Theobald earns his living as a mercenary now, his loyalities are still with the Commonwealth and the Archon. He will not, under any circumstances, accept a contract for HOD, that will result in actions, directly or indirectly, against the LCAF, the Commonwealth or his family.

For his future, Theobald dreams of commanding a whole Company of Battlemechs from the cockpit of a Warhammer, the BattleMech that sparked his enthusiasm for becoming a 'Mech Warrior when he was a small boy.
